Conveyor belts for mining, quarries and stone crushers

By the Boston Rubbers engineering team · Updated 15 October 2026

Crushers and quarries are the hardest wear duties a belt meets: sharp, heavy rock dropped from height onto the belt at the loading point. The cover must resist cutting and gouging, and the carcass must take the impact.

What a crusher belt needs

  • An abrasion resistant cover: M24 / DIN-X for sharp lumps, DIN-W for fine, highly abrasive material.
  • A thick top cover: 6+2 mm for most crusher conveyors, 8+3 mm under primary crushers and big lumps.
  • A carcass with enough plies to take impact: 4 or 5 plies on heavily loaded conveyors.
  • Impact idlers or an impact bed under the loading point, and skirting that seals without pressing into the belt.

Stone crusher conveyor belt sizes

Standard widths are 300, 400, 500, 600, 650, 800, 1000, 1200 mm, and 1400 and 1600 mm on order. Crusher plants most often use 500, 650, 800 and 1000 mm belts, in 3 or 4 plies, with 5+2 or 6+2 mm covers.

Cutting versus wear: choosing X or W

Two different things destroy a crusher belt. Large, sharp rock dropped from height cuts and gouges the cover: the answer is high tensile strength and tear resistance, the M24 / DIN-X grade. Fine, sharp material such as sand, crusher dust and ore fines wears the cover away steadily: the answer is the lowest abrasion loss, the DIN-W grade.

Many plants use both: X grade under the primary and secondary crushers where lumps are big, W grade on the conveyors that carry fines and sand.

Cover grades compared

Protecting the belt at the loading point

  • Keep the drop height as low as the plant allows; impact energy rises with height.
  • Load in the direction of travel and in the centre of the belt.
  • Fit impact idlers or an impact bed under the loading zone.
  • Set skirt rubber just clear of the belt; pressed skirts wear grooves into the cover.
  • Repair cuts early, before water and fines reach the fabric.

Belt care and maintenance

Mines and overburden

Mine conveyors are longer and carry more tonnage than crusher plant belts, so the rating rises: 800 to 1250 kN/m in 4 to 6 plies is common on main lines, with abrasion resistant covers. Underground and coal mines need fire resistant antistatic belts.

Questions

Which conveyor belt is best for a stone crusher?

An abrasion resistant belt in M24 / DIN-X grade, 3 or 4 plies, with a 5+2 or 6+2 mm cover; 8+3 mm under the primary crusher.
