Conveyor belts for cement plants

By the Boston Rubbers engineering team · Updated 15 October 2026

A cement plant runs several very different conveyors: crushed limestone from the mines, raw meal and additives, hot clinker from the cooler, coal to the kiln and finished cement to packing. Each needs its own belt.

Getting the clinker belt right

The clinker belt gives the most trouble in a cement plant. Use the temperature at the loading point, allow for hot spots from the cooler, and use a thick top cover so the heat does not reach the plies. T2 suits most coolers; T3 where the clinker runs hottest.

Limestone and crusher conveyors

Limestone arrives from the mine in lumps and leaves the crusher sharp-edged. The belt under the crusher discharge takes both impact and cutting, so it needs an abrasion resistant M24 / DIN-X cover, a 6 mm top cover or more, and a carcass with enough plies to absorb the drop. Impact idlers under the loading point protect both the belt and the idlers.

Further down the line, stacker and reclaimer belts carry crushed limestone and additives over long distances. Here steady abrasion matters more than impact, and a 5+2 mm X grade cover on a 500 kN/m carcass covers most plants.

Coal and petcoke to the kiln

Coal and petcoke conveyors run in galleries and close to the kiln, where a belt fire would spread. Fire resistant antistatic (FR) belts, flame tested to ISO 340, are the safe choice and are often required by the plant’s fire code and insurer.

Cement, packing and dispatch

Finished cement is fine and dusty but not hot or sharp, and bagged cement is light. General purpose belts (IS 1891 N17 / DIN-Y) with 4+2 mm covers are the economical choice for the mill, the packers and the truck loaders.

What to send for a cement plant quotation

  • Which conveyor: crusher, stacker, reclaimer, clinker, coal, cement or packing.
  • Belt width, centre distance and lift, and the pulley diameters.
  • Capacity in tonnes per hour and belt speed.
  • Largest lump size and, for clinker, the temperature at the loading point and the hottest it gets.
  • The standard named in your tender, if any (IS 1891 or DIN 22102).

Questions

Which conveyor belt is used in cement plants?

Cement plants use M24 / DIN-X abrasion resistant belts for limestone, T2 or T3 heat resistant belts for clinker, FR belts for coal and general purpose belts for cement and packing.
