Steel plants combine the two hardest belt duties: heat (sinter, hot returns, foundry sand) and abrasion (iron ore, pellets, scrap). The belt has to be chosen for whichever does more damage on each conveyor.
Belt by duty
| Duty | Main risk | Typical belt |
|---|---|---|
| Sinter, hot returns | Heat | EP 800/4 6+2 T3 |
| Iron ore, pellets | Abrasion, weight | EP 630/4 6+2 X |
| Foundry sand, returns | Heat, abrasion | EP 500/4 5+2 T2 |
| Scrap | Cutting, impact | EP 800/5 8+3 X |
Sinter plant and hot returns
Sinter leaves the cooler hot and abrasive at the same time, which makes it one of the hardest belt duties in any industry. A T3 heat resistant cover (up to 150°C continuous) with a thick top cover keeps the heat away from the fabric plies; the carcass rating follows the tonnage and the length of the conveyor.
Hot returns and screened fines lie flat on the belt and pass heat to it faster than lumps. Where the belt sees fines at temperature, choose the next heat grade up and keep the belt running: a hot load standing on a stopped belt does the most damage.
Iron ore, pellets and raw materials
Iron ore and pellets are heavy and abrasive but cool. An M24 / DIN-X abrasion resistant cover on a 630 or 800 kN/m carcass, with 6+2 mm covers, is the usual starting point. Pellets roll, so the belt needs to trough well: EP fabric suits it.
Foundries
Foundry sand, castings and returns combine heat and abrasion at smaller scale. T2 heat resistant covers on a 500 kN/m carcass suit most foundry conveyors; under heavy castings, add plies for impact.
What to send for a steel plant quotation
- The conveyor and the material on it.
- Material temperature at loading, average and peak.
- Width, centres, lift, pulley diameters, capacity and speed.
- The standard in your tender.
Questions
Which belt is used for sinter?
Hot sinter needs a heat resistant belt, usually T3 (up to 150°C) with a thick top cover, on a carcass rated for the tonnage.
Need the belt chosen for you?
Send your conveyor, our engineers select the belt
Length, lift, width, speed, capacity and the material. We reply with the rating, covers and grade, a datasheet and a quotation, usually the same working day.
